CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Both of us started breathing a little easier when we saw the signs to Interstate 26.

“Which way?” Claire asked.

“Charleston,” I said. “We need to visit your father’s bank first thing in the morning. I’m hoping your face or your name won’t jar a teller’s memory. Does anyone know you there?”

Claire shook her head. “It’s a large bank. That might be why my father chose it. I don’t think anyone there knew him, either.”

“Do you have any idea where he could have gotten those two guns?”

She shook her head again. “Like I told you, finding that gun in the safe-deposit box was a shock, especially after I had kept insisting to Sheriff Vargo that Father had never owned a gun.”

“Is he the one who knows your case best?”

Claire nodded. “The Summerville Police Department was the first on the scene, but because there was a death with potentially suspicious circumstances, most of the investigation was conducted by the county sheriff’s office. Dorchester County only has about a hundred thousand people living in it, so the force isn’t that large. Sheriff Vargo is as familiar with the case as anyone.”

“I need to find a way to talk to him, then,” I said.

“That should be easy,” she said. “Tell him that you’re a national news correspondent and that before sending a film crew to see him you need to run some questions by him first. He’ll talk for sure.”

“And why’s that?”

“The county sheriff is an elected official, and this is an election year. The sheriff won’t want to miss a photo opportunity like that.”
